Volcanic origins
The geological history of Mauritius begins some 8-10 million years ago, when massive volcanic eruptions shaped this spectacular island. Today, its varied landscapes, from verdant mountains to white sandy beaches, sometimes dotted with volcanic rocks, bear witness to its unique geological heritage.
The first discoveries
Although Arab navigators first discovered the island in the Middle Ages, it fell into oblivion until the Portuguese rediscovered it in the early 16th century. Subsequently, the Dutch, French and British occupied the island in succession.
The colonial era
In the 17th century, the Dutch briefly established their presence on the island, before being replaced by the French, who renamed it “Île de France”. For almost a century, the French developed the sugar industry and imported slave labor from Africa, India and Madagascar.
British colonization
In 1810, the British took control of Mauritius at the Battle of Grand Port. They renamed the island “Mauritius” after Prince Maurice de Nassau. Under British rule, the sugar industry flourished and the island became an important trading center in the Indian Ocean. The massive influx of Indian immigrants to work on the sugar plantations left a deep cultural imprint on the island.
On the road to independence
During the 20th century, the independence movement gained strength in Mauritius. After many years of struggle, the island finally gained independence on March 12, 1968. Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam became the first Prime Minister of the newly independent country, and since then Mauritius has evolved into a stable democracy.
Modern development
Since independence, Mauritius has undergone remarkable development. It has transformed itself into a diversified and prosperous economy, with sustained growth in tourism, finance, technology and industry. The island has also preserved its natural heritage, with the creation of national parks to protect its unique flora and fauna, such as the thirty-seven-hectare Pamplemousses Tropical Botanical Garden in Pamplemousses.
