Borders open again in Mauritius

As of 1 October 2021, Mauritius will welcome visitors from abroad, whether vaccinated or not, to its island. In order to keep everyone safe including the local population and visitors, the government has implemented a clear protocol. Here are the important points to remember depending on whether you are a vaccinated or unvaccinated future traveller.

Entry requirements to Mauritius for travellers from abroad

Official communications specify that the health protocol established by the Mauritian authorities applies to all individuals visiting the country who are vaccinated and planning to stay in one of the local hotels.

Vaccinated Travellers – Prior to departure for Mauritius

This category of travellers must have received the scheduled doses of the Covid-19 vaccine prior to departure for Mauritius and be able to present written proof at the airport:
Two weeks after receiving the 2nd dose of the Pfizer vaccine
28 days after receiving the Johnson & Johnson vaccine (single dose)
For those who tested positive for Covid more than 2 months ago and received 1 dose of Pfizer vaccine
Purchase insurance to cover COVID-19.

Vaccinated travellers – On arrival in Mauritius

Vaccinated travellers must present a negative PCR test, which must be carried out within 72 hours preceding the last point of embarkation.
Finally, they must undergo a rapid and free anti-Covid test (nose or mouth) on the day of their arrival in Mauritius and then on the 5th day of their stay in the country.
Vaccinated foreigners who wish to do so may also voluntarily decide to undergo a four-week period in one of the hotels designated explicitly by the local authorities.

Non-vaccinated Travellers – Prior to departure for Mauritius

Take care to book a 14-night stay in one of the following hotels, with meals and transfers included: Gold Crest, Manisa, Gold Beach, Grand Blue and Ambre. This is to ensure that the accommodation is suitable for unvaccinated travellers to complete their 14-night period.
Take out Covid-19 insurance, unless they are Mauritian nationals, holders of a Mauritian work permit and a Mauritian residence permit.
Carry out a negative PCR test 72 hours before the last point of embarkation and keep the written proof, to be presented once on site.
Complete health forms (passenger identification, health declaration, health laboratory) before or during the flight to Mauritius.

Non-vaccinated travellers – On arrival in Mauritius

Non-vaccinated travellers must submit the above forms to the immigration officers at the airport in Mauritius.
They must undergo 3 PCR tests for a fee (12,000 Mauritian rupees, about 240 € / 280 USD): 1 test on arrival, 1 test on day 7 and another on day 14 during their stay in Mauritius.
If the third test is negative, the four-week period ends.

What is the health protocol for minors staying in Mauritius?

Unvaccinated minors under 18 years of age coming from abroad must stay in the same hotel as their vaccinated companions (parents or a relative).
0 – 17 years: PCR only, minor accompanied by a parent
Under 5 years: Saliva PCR test (mouth)

What happens if the anti-Covid-19 test is positive in a vaccinated traveller?

The official information states that in case of a positive test in an asymptomatic vaccinated traveller, the latter will be subjected to a period of isolation “in a room provided for this purpose until a PCR test is carried out by the Ministry of Health and its result is known”. Of course, he or she will be entitled to the same room service as that provided in quarantine hotels in the meantime.

If the traveller is symptomatic, he can use his Covid insurance to be transferred to a hospital.

If the traveller is under 15 years of age, they will be quarantined and accompanied by an adult.
