What standard of living to expect when investing in real estate in Mauritius?

Mauritius lives, literally. As a paradise island, it generates tourism statistics that make other famous destinations around the world pale in contrast. For several years, this small insular republic, independent and economically dynamic, attracts foreigners willing to invest in real estate. Careful about offering a secure setting to these investors, the government has established various facilities that have proved to be effective and efficient over time, as well as financial advantages. Those who have experienced Mauritius by buying a villa or an apartment attest to a dreamy standard of living…

What standard of living in Mauritius?

The climate

Mauritius has a subtropical climate in which summers are hot, with temperatures fluctuating between 20 and 30°C. Winters are soft and cool, accompanied by a touch of humidity, with temperatures between 16 and 20°C. The summer season lasts from November to April, while winter takes place from June to September. Concerning the cyclonic period, which also lasts from November to April, the authorities have established an entire procedure to keep the population safe.

Hobbies/Leisure activities

Golf, water activities, deep-sea fishing, laze, hiking, beach barbecues… Mauritius may be a small island, but it is not lacking in ways to spend free time. Considering the generally nice weather, there is always something to do outside the house/outdoors.

The infrastructures

Mauritius hosts a big and modern airport located in the south, at Mahebourg, which links the island to the rest of the world on a daily basis.

With regards to the road infrastructures, the principal access routes, highways and main roads are in good condition. To increase traffic fluidity around and inside the capital city, enlargement works on existing roads are currently in progress. The imminent arrival of the Light Rail scheduled for 2020 is also worth mentioning.

As for telecommunications, Mauritius has a good infrastructure for home phones, a network for mobile phones (divided between two network providers, namely Emtel and Orange) as well as fibre-optic internet connections.

Art of living and education

Mauritius does not limit itself to its beautiful sandy beaches bathed by the sun to provide the Mauritian sweetness of life. Indeed, the island is well-known for its harmonious multiculturalism which gives way to social peace and to particularly strong values of freedom that make this small paradise even more pleasant to live in.

The country is also a currently developing one in terms of education, with the objective to become an ‘education hub’. Many high-level primary and secondary public schools are scattered around the island. Private schools and university campuses, one of which is an international university campus having partnerships with prestigious European Higher Education institutions for a very diverse range of study subjects can also be accessed.

The health system

Hospitals and several private clinics, all equipped and modern, can be found across the island. Mauritius also has all the infrastructures and equipment necessary for dental, optical and ENT care, as well as for contemporary health care including plastic surgery. French foreigners living on the island can benefit from a system which is similar to that of Social Security if they wish to rely on the private sector. Indeed, CFE (Caisse des Français de l’Étranger) offers a complete support with regards to health care, hospitalisation, etc.

In any case, Mauritius is home to many French doctors as well as Mauritian practitioners who pursued their studies abroad, a worthwhile factor to consider. Many of them have settled in the north of the island and can be easily found on the internet.

When a medical act cannot be performed in Mauritius, transferring over to Reunion Island, a French region and department, is perfectly doable within less than an hour’s flight.
