Why do we return to Mauritius?

Because Mauritius has everything we want from a holiday destination and indeed for a longer stay!

We come back every year

We rented a small house in the north of the island but it was not on the sea. Every day we went to a different beach and one day we met a man who had rented a house on a lovely beach through a local agency called Villa Vie run by Francoise Maujean.

We went to meet Francoise and since then have returned to rent a villa on the sea every year. The standard of the villas varies from apartments to luxury properties but all come with a maid who works mornings servicing the villa, cleaning, washing and ironing and can be paid extra to cook.

A very helpful booklet comes with each villa giving local information and there is a welcoming package of basics in the villa for your arrival. We know if we need advice on any subject we can contact the staff at Villa Vie who are always warm, welcoming and efficient.

All activities are available at a high standard such as golf, deep sea fishing, diving, water sports, yoga, etc. and there are good masseurs, hairdressers, doctors, dentists, etc. The sea is clean and warm as the island is surrounded by a coral reef. The economy is stable and the people are friendly, it has good roads, shops, supermarkets, restaurants with a choice of International, French, Italian, Chinese, Indian, Thai and Creole. Cars drive on the left and can be cheaply and easily rented. The people speak French or English and the climate is good all the year round with the north of the island having the best weather and the least rainfall.

Many people know Mauritius only for its hotels which are varied and excellent but it has a lot more to offer. We like the freedom of renting and enjoying an evening drink with a view of the sea from the verandah. If we wish to go out there is a huge choice of good restaurants and our favourite activities are available within 15 minutes of the house. For us, this means a championship golf course, good yoga classes and excellent massages either at the villa or in their salon. We can walk on the beach, swim as often as we like in that beautiful turquoise sea and just relax in peace and quiet knowing that if we want to we can go out and find entertainment which is available close by.

Obviously Mauritius has changed a lot since we first came here. More infrastructure, more buildings, more cars, but the economy is good. Sophie, the daughter of Francoise has joined her and extended the scope of Villa Vie from holiday rentals to include long-term lettings and sales of houses to residents but also to foreigners like ourselves, called IRS. The purchase of these includes residency of the island. If we were 20 years younger maybe! We are very happy to return to our idyllic island once a year for a longer holiday rental and enjoy what Mauritius has to offer.
