In this article, we&#8217;ll guide you through the key stages of preparation and action to take in the event of a cyclone warning in Mauritius.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Between January and March, a period marked by high temperatures, high humidity and an unstable atmosphere, the island can be vulnerable to tropical depressions. In the event of a threat, the <a href=\"http:\/\/metservice.intnet.mu\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">meteorological station<\/a> issues different classes of warnings via the media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Class 1:<\/strong> Issued 36 to 48 hours before Mauritius or Rodrigues are affected by wind gusts of up to 120 km\/hr. We recommend that you take the usual precautionary measures, such as making sure you have batteries, candles, provisions, water, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Class 3:<\/strong> Issued to allow at least 6 hours of daylight before the arrival of 120 km\/h gusts. At this stage, the population must stay indoors, companies close and insurance companies no longer provide coverage for vehicles on the roads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Class 4:<\/strong> Issued when gusts reach 120 km\/h and no improvement is expected. At this level, it is imperative to stay safe, either at home or in a safe place. It is important to note that from January 2023, the cyclone warning system has been expanded to six levels, including new safety bulletins and early warnings for heavy rain, high winds, dangerous swells, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So it&#8217;s essential to be adequately prepared to minimize the risks. Identify the nearest cyclone shelters, discuss routes to get there and prepare an emergency kit containing food supplies, water, medication, important documents, flashlights, etc. Make sure every family member understands evacuation and safety procedures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Material preparations: Secure your property<\/strong><br>Protect your home by installing temporary protective shutters, securely fastening outdoor objects that could be blown away, and checking the strength of the roof. Prepare a supply of drinking water and make sure you have basic tools, such as flashlights and batteries, ready for use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Evacuation: Follow official instructions<\/strong><br>If you find yourself in a high-risk area, follow the evacuation instructions issued by the local authorities. Plan in advance where you will take refuge and how you will get there. Avoid taking unnecessary risks, and leave early enough to avoid the traffic jams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>After the cyclone: Stay safe<\/strong><br>Once the cyclone has passed through the region, it&#8217;s essential to remain vigilant. Avoid flooded areas, be aware of potentially dangerous debris and wait for instructions from the authorities before returning home. Make sure your family and friends are safe, and keep them informed of your situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By anticipating needs, respecting the authorities&#8217; safety measures and staying informed, you increase your chances of protecting your family, your home and your possessions.
